Started dog, "Buddy" has been SOLD. Two females, "Annie" and "Baby Doll" are still available.

Our started dog program begins by bringing out the natural desire in the dog, then instills the obedience needed to control your dog in intense situations. We teach basic field and whistle commands, introduce the e-collar, and expose them to lots of birds. Go to our dogs for sale page for more info. Our started dogs go quickly! Dog Sales Subject to Sales Tax

People are often taken aback when sales tax is added to the cost of our dogs. We try to remember to mention it upfront to avoid surprises. The California State Board of Equalization Pub 122 states in part, "Sales tax generally applies to sales of animals, birds, reptiles, and insects that do not meet the definition of “food animals”, whether they are used for working stock, breeding, pets, or other purposes." Abby!
Enthusiasm + Natural Ability

WANTED: Active family with an avid hunter. High-energy, active, powerful, motivated, yellow labrador retriever needs a companion and teacher. Abby was raised with children indoors and has learned to live outdoors in a kennel. She has basic obedience and is eager to start her next level of training in bird hunting. Will be a great waterfowl / upland hunter. Needs daily exercise. 2 years old, up-to-date on shots, no papers. $1000. 530-865-2895.

We are happy to introduce Abby, a 2-year old, well-mannered, high-energy yellow lab, who was bred at Hightest Retrievers. She has had obedience training at Hightest, brush-up obedience training here at Lockhard, and is eager to begin her next level of bird training. She has tremendous desire and is very quick, and with your love, attention, and training, will become the great hunting and family dog she is meant to be.

Weather is Heating Up...

Don't leave your best buddy in a hot truck or car. When out in the field, take care of your best friend's needs. Don't forget to bring lots of water and have a first aid kit at hand. You can easily make your own kit—check out this site.

Long-Term Training

Pointing dogs are not natural retrievers, and even natural retrievers need some training. This exercise teaches your dog to hold and deliver an object without fail. Once they have learned to hold the object, the command, Fetch, is begun. Successful completion is when the dog fetches an object (including birds), holds it at heel, and delivers to hand.

Not all dogs are mature enough for this exercise during initial training. In these cases, we advise a later session. Lockhard does not force a dog if not ready. This exercise benefits all bird dogs.
