Hunting: West Coast vs. Mid-West When you think about it, it's logical that hunting would be different from the West Coast as compared to the Mid-West. We were worried that maybe there would be little upland and waterfowl hunting in Ohio, but we were mistaken. The upland game refuges are plentiful, and State Parks release birds for the public. Waterfowl is completely different: from rice holes in CA to pot holes and farm fields in OH. Different varieties of goose and ducks are seen — Honkers are plentiful in OH rather than Speckle Belly, and Black Ducks are seen in OH and not in CA. Gary has resumed the sport of deer hunting and is doing it all with archery. Hunting is done near houses, so strategy is about enclosed spaces. No high-powered rifles allowed — it's archery and shotgun with a 2-day muzzle loading season. Different variety again: Mule and Black Tail in CA vs. White Tail in OH. Lockhard's Ohio Buckeye

Puppy #7 from Lockhard's Miss Millie's 2009 litter, born May 8th, Lockhard's Ohio Buckeye will be the first Lockhard puppy to be raised and trained in Northeast Ohio. He will be Lockhard's next stud dog, carrying on the genes from Buster Lockhard (grandfather) and Lockhard's Miss Millie. Buck is a handsome boy with a sweet disposition. He is independent and curious, and has become an active member of our pack. Buck showed his natural pointing ability when introduced to birds. We expect him to be easily guided into a fine bird dog and will hunt test him as soon as he's ready.

Location: Sullivan, OH We are located in Sullivan, OH on a perfect setting for Lockhard: 15.7 acres, 1.5 acre pond, several open acres for training, and 8 wooded acres for training dogs on woodcocks. Take a look at the new property at the height of Fall this year.

Buck and the rest of the dogs were great travelers across the country. Click for big and more. (6 photos). We were happy to see that our dogs traveled amazingly well in 7 days on the road. We took the long way, going north to Oregon and Spokane, WA, then east to Montana, and then through Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Each time we stopped to water the dogs, they would eagerly jump out and look at us as if to say, "Are we here yet?!" At the Columbia Gorge in Oregon, we had to stop roadside for a minor repair. Heavy brush was perfect for Chukar, and Millie jumped out raring to go! |
