Lockhard's New Training Format
Lockhard is starting a fresh, new training format. We listened to our clients and found that many of you want to train your own dog, but don’t know the steps, tools needed, don't want your dog gone for a few months, and thought you didn’t have the time.
To fulfill this need, we're creating training modules using class-oriented, online presentations: power point slides with step-by-step instruction, pictures, and video. Our goal is to build your confidence to train your own dog. We’ll show you situations you might encounter, behavior you might expect from your dog, and the simple tools you’ll need. This will be a learning experience for you, the handler, and your dog.
The online presentation uses meeting software and will be interactive with the trainer. You'll be able to ask questions in real time. You could choose a private session or be part of a 25 person class. There is no software needed for you to purchase to participate.
Classes
Several classes are being designed, fromchoosing and purchasing your pup, to training a finished dog. The classes are as follows:
Pre puppy – 16 weeks. Teaches you to purchase the right pup for your needs, prepare your home for the pup, and proper interaction with the pup to prepare for obedience indoors and out.

Bird dog foundation. Prerequisite for anyone planning to take the Finished Dog Class. You’ll learn to teach your puppy to obey with extreme distraction (birds are a huge distraction). E-collar is introduced to the pup. The program finishes with complete gun introduction.

daily training sessions. Click for big and more (7 photos).
Finished Pointing Dog. Prepare your dog for the field, to be steady to wing and/or shot, hold point, control desire of the dog (now that we are really into the birds, desire is heightened), and manage your dog in the field (your dog is learning what you expect from him in the field and you’ll be influencing your dog’s every move). The exercises taught in this class are a must to prepare your dog before going to the field.

Finished Retriever / Upland. This class is designed to get your pup ready to head to the blind and be a good boy. We’ll discuss blind manners, marking, steadiness drills. Your dog will sit on the blind until released to make the retrieve, make a straight line run to retrieve the downed bird, and a nice straight line back to the blind, to deliver and settle down. This class will introduce the drills with hand signals for controlling your dog on the retrieve.

Forced Retrieve. Average time to begin this training is 1-1.5 years old. Some dogs can begin sooner. In the young dog’s first year, we work on the natural retrieve only. Some of you will decide to force the retrieve into your dog after the first season. I like to force all of my dogs. Force fetching teaches a dog to hold a bird, deliver a bird to hand, and to always bring the bird back to you. It is a program that includes a bit of pressure/stress on your dog. Your dog must be at a certain maturity level to accept this training. Most dogs will be successful in this training, however I like to wait until after their first year of hunting to see how they progress naturally. With most training, there will be a certain amount of resistance. With this training, if the resistance continues, you must stop this training and let your dog mature a little more, and continue at a later date.
